On the Radio Last Night

Did anyone here catch the Coast to Coast broadcast last night? It was on survival prep:

"Survival Skills
Founder of the Aboriginal Living Skills School, Cody Lundin shared survival tips from backwoods self-reliance to urban disaster mitigation. Less than 7% of the US population is prepared to deal with a disaster, he reported. The biggest cause of death in such situations is from hypothermia (cold) or hyperthermia (heat), so regulation of body temperature is key, he said. Having alternative heating/cooling sources is useful, he noted, adding that individual homes typically have "microhabitats" where one room will retain heat or be cooler.

During the Katrina disaster, many victims did not know simple ways to disinfect water. One method he described involves putting water in a plastic liter container (the kind that soda is sold in) and simply leaving in the sun for six hours. The sun's UV radiation kills off germs.

Lundin also discussed how to deal with a corpse during a disaster, noting that dead bodies don't spread disease, unless they died of one. To keep up morale among the living, it's important to have some type of closure ritual for the deceased, even if they are just being temporarily buried or wrapped in plastic."

I have recording software on my pc that automatically recorded the program, so if there's any way I can share it with you all, give me an idea. Is it legal for me to post such a recording?

madfranks, technically it wouldn't be "legal" to post your recording. It's copyright material for paid subscribers only (like me),,but don't let that stop you.

NOTE: CTC opens the archives to the public for a few days every now and then. You can then "legally" listen to the files, but you still can't republish them,

Anyway, I just listened to the interview, and disappointed am I.

Cody Lundin is very evasive and flippant about many of the things that matter most to GIMers, such as weaponry and "money". I think he dodges PMs altogether.

I think host Ian Punnett himself had better suggestions than Lundin, such as to stockpile salt and canned tuna for bartering, and to camouflage the fact that you are prepared for SHTF to at least superficially point the motorcycle zombies in another direction.

Phideaux, there are different levels of "Survival", and what Lundin teaches is day-to-day survival, the "Let's not die in the desert and never be found" type; not the long-term economic survival that is the focus of many GIMers.

takes you on a wild ride into "self-reliant land" with an honest, blunt account of what every family needs in the home, office, or car to prepare for possible emergencies. From the basics such as shelter, water, food, survival kits, and first-aid, to survival exotics such as building a makeshift toilet, catching rodents for food, and safely disposing of a corpse, When All Hell Breaks Loose is the first book to concisely and humorously outline a simple survival system using everyday household items to survive catastrophes from Los Angeles to Paris and everywhere in between.
This is Katrina-level survival, at worst. Yeah, he evades the parts about weaponry and self-defense; frankly, most people are queasy about using a gun for it's intended purpose. Oh, everyone thinks guns are KEWL, but reducing a living person to a cooling lump of flesh, for real, is not. Most folks--too many, really--can't decide that they are prepared to kill a person when the lights are on, the water is hot and flowing, the fridge is full of food, and Officer Friendly is on patrol. It's only later, when the veneer of civilization is torn away that they clamor for guns and baseball bats. That's really a whole other shelf of books. And most of the people who make the conscious decision to "Prepare" cross the gun threshold at some point. This book is aimed at the folks who have an old Snicker's bar somewhere in the backseat and a flashlight full of dead batteries.

BTW, his previous book is very good and I highly recommend it:

98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive!

It cuts survival down to the premise that most people who die in survival situations do so because of being too hot or too cold. If you have the means to keep your body temperature normal (building a fire to keep warm, finding water to not heatstroke out), then death is a lot less likely.
